How Far Do UK Drivers Actually Drive? The Data Behind the Miles
Most car journeys in Britain are under five miles, and the average person travels just over 6,000 miles a year. The official numbers matter more than you might think.
How many miles do you actually drive in a year? Most people guess high. Ask a room of drivers and the answers usually start at 12,000 miles and climb, a figure borrowed from lease agreements and company car policies rather than from real life. The official numbers tell a quieter story, and that story matters for almost every decision a car buyer makes, from the size of the battery you need to the tax you will pay later this decade.
The best source for this is the Department for Transport's National Travel Survey, which has been tracking how people in England actually move since the 1960s. It uses travel diaries kept by thousands of households, not estimates, so it captures the school run and the supermarket trip that never register in anyone's mental maths.
The headline numbers
In 2024, the average person in England made 922 trips and travelled 6,082 miles, spending about 362 hours a year travelling. That works out at roughly 18 trips and 17 miles of travel per person per day, and it includes every mode: car, bus, walk, rail and everything else. Total travel is still about 6% below its 2019 level, so the pandemic-era shift towards travelling less has settled into a permanent feature rather than a blip.
The car dominates, but less absolutely than people assume. Car trips, as driver or passenger, made up 59% of all trips and 76% of all distance travelled in 2024. Walking covers 29% of trips but only 4% of miles. Rail manages 2% of trips and 11% of distance. Britain is a car country, and it is not close.
Notably, the average person travels those 6,082 miles without necessarily driving all of them. Men travelled 6,549 miles per person against women's 5,633, and men drove more of their miles: 4,940 miles per person as car drivers against 4,314 for women. Driving peaks in middle age, with men aged 50 to 59 covering 6,712 miles a year as car drivers.
The pattern that matters most: almost everything is short
Here is the statistic that should shape how you think about any car purchase, electric or otherwise. In 2024, 25% of all trips were under one mile, and 70% were under five miles. Seven in ten of everything Britons do in a day, by any mode, fits within a distance you could cycle in half an hour.
Even the car's share of those short trips is striking. For trips under a mile, walking is the most common mode at 81%, but the car takes most of the rest. The long motorway slog that dominates the imagination is a rarity: the average person's motoring is built from school runs, commutes, shopping trips and visits, most of them over before the engine, or the battery, has properly warmed up.
This has direct consequences. A typical modern electric car covers 250 miles or more on a charge. Against an average day of well under 30 miles of driving, that is more than a week of ordinary motoring per charge, with the public network needed only for the occasional long trip. It is also why the winter range conversation, which we covered in winter EV range myths, matters less than it seems: losing a fifth of your range in January still leaves you comfortably clear of your daily needs.
The average car, and the average electric car
Per-person travel is not the same as per-car mileage, since many journeys carry passengers and many households run two cars. What the trade data shows, though, is that electric cars are not being left in the garage. Figures from Solera Cap HPI, based on almost two million trade transactions, put the average annual mileage of an electric car at 8,740 miles, against 8,296 for petrol cars. EVs have consistently out-driven petrol cars every month since April 2023, a decade after trailing them by more than 2,000 miles a year.
That single statistic dismantles the idea that electric cars are only fit for short suburban hops. The people who own them are using them more than petrol owners use theirs, year after year, and the direction of travel for petrol mileage is downward, off about 12% in a decade.
Why this all matters more than it used to
Two policy threads make personal mileage a live issue. The first is the pay-per-mile charge confirmed at the Autumn Budget 2025, which from April 2028 will tax electric and plug-in hybrid cars by the mile at roughly half the fuel duty rate. The less you drive, the less you pay, and the official averages become the benchmark for working out who wins and loses. We set out that arithmetic in the 3p per mile question.
The second is charging. A driver covering 20 miles a day needs a fraction of a full charge each night, which changes what home setup makes sense; the case for a 7kW wallbox is weaker than the sales pitch suggests if your daily mileage is typical, and we examined that trade-off in do you need a 7kW wallbox. The honest read
The average British driver travels much less, and much shorter, than the folk wisdom suggests: about 6,000 miles a person a year across all modes, with seven in ten trips under five miles. Against that backdrop, the range figures on an electric car's spec sheet have moved from being the binding constraint to being a rounding error for daily life, and the evidence is that EV owners drive further each year than petrol owners anyway. Where the average still bites is on cost: mileage-based taxation from 2028, lease allowances priced per mile and residual values all key off the odometer. Knowing your own real number, not the 12,000-mile folk figure, is the cheapest piece of car research you will ever do.
