How Much Does a Home EV Wallbox Actually Cost?

If you are buying an electric car and you have a driveway, a home wallbox is the single best investment you can make. Public charging works, but charging at home on an overnight tariff costs a fraction of the price per mile, and the car refuels while you sleep. The question most buyers arrive with is simple: what will a wallbox actually cost me? The answer is more manageable than many expect, and for a large group of households the government will pay a meaningful chunk of it.

The headline number

A fully installed 7kW home charger in the UK in 2026 typically costs around £1,000 including the unit and labour, with most straightforward installations falling in a band from roughly £800 to £1,500. The charger unit itself accounts for £450 to £800 of that at supply-only prices, and the rest is labour, cabling and certification.

That £1,000 figure assumes a textbook job: a 7kW unit mounted on an outside wall within about ten metres of your consumer unit, on an ordinary single-phase home supply with no complications. Most UK houses fall into that category. When the price climbs, it is almost always due to the electrics of the property rather than the charger.

What moves the price

The common extras are predictable, and a good installer will flag them at the survey stage rather than on the invoice.

A long cable run from the fuse board to where the car parks is the most frequent one, especially for detached garages or parking spots around the side of the house. Cable beyond the standard allowance is usually priced per metre, and concealing it in trunking adds to the labour.

A consumer unit upgrade adds a few hundred pounds if your fuse board is full or an older design without the spare capacity a dedicated EV circuit needs. Earthing work can push the price up on some properties too, where the supply arrangement requires an earth rod to be fitted.

Groundworks are the big one. If the cable has to cross a driveway, trenching and making good can add serious money, though for most homes the charger goes on a wall within easy reach of the supply. At the top end, a 22kW charger needs a three-phase supply, which the overwhelming majority of UK homes simply do not have, and upgrading to one is rarely worth considering for domestic use. The grant: £500 for the households that need it most

Since 1 April 2026, the government's chargepoint grant has been worth 75% of the purchase and installation cost, up to a maximum of £500. The increase from the previous £350 was announced in February 2026, when the Department for Transport confirmed the grants would be extended for a further year and the number of separate schemes cut from eight to five to make the system easier to navigate.

The crucial detail is eligibility. The grant is aimed at people who cannot simply install a charger on their own driveway: renters, flat owners, residential landlords, and households with on-street parking. If you own a house with off-street parking, you do not qualify, and the full price sits with you.

For those who do qualify, the maths is appealing. Against a typical £1,000 installation, £500 off is close to half the cost, bringing the net outlay into the same territory as a family holiday. Applications go through an OZEV-authorised installer, who claims the grant on your behalf and deducts it from the invoice, so the process is mostly paperwork rather than forms and waiting. The schemes are funded until 31 March 2027, so the support is confirmed for the current buying cycle.

The running cost payoff

The wallbox is the enabler; the tariff is where the savings actually live. Dedicated EV tariffs charge as little as 8p per kWh overnight on the best current deals, against a standard rate approaching 28p. The government's own framing puts home charging at as little as 2p per mile, which is what makes the upfront spend on a charger pay back quickly.

Set that against public rapid charging, which averages around 79p per kWh according to Zapmap data, and the economics of a wallbox make themselves clear. A driver covering 10,000 miles a year at 3.5 miles per kWh would spend roughly £230 a year charging overnight at 8p, or well over £2,000 doing the same miles on rapid chargers. Even allowing for the occasional public top-up on longer trips, the wallbox pays for itself within the first year or two for most mileages.

Choosing the unit

Within the 7kW class, price differences reflect features rather than speed. An entry-level unit from a reputable brand costs from around £450, while premium smart chargers with solar integration, app control and dynamic load balancing can reach £1,000 or more before installation. All of them deliver the same 7kW on a standard single-phase supply.

The feature genuinely worth paying for is smart charging, meaning the ability to integrate with an EV tariff and charge automatically when electricity is cheapest. That is the function that converts the hardware into a money-saving machine. Beyond that, choose on warranty length, the quality of the app and whether the design suits where it will hang. A tethered cable is more convenient if one car will use it; a socketed unit is more flexible for visiting vehicles or a future car with a different lead.
