Type 01 eve: what Jaguar has told us, and what to watch
Jaguar's Type 01 is revealed in New York tomorrow. What is confirmed, what is still rumour, and the five things that will decide whether the reboot works.
Tomorrow night in New York, Jaguar ends a two-year silence. The Type 01, the first production car of the most radical rebrand any British maker has attempted, will be revealed on 6 October, and Jaguar has not changed the date despite a fortnight in which a slip would have been easy. Its own Type 01 page still carries the line "all will be revealed in New York on 6 October 2026", and no announcement has moved it. If you have read nothing else about this car, here is the state of play the night before.
We covered the wider story of the relaunch and what success would look like in our preview last week. Today is the practical version: what Jaguar has actually said, what is circulating without its signature, and what to watch for when the covers come off.
Confirmed: the car exists, and so does the date
The confirmed list is short but solid. The Type 01 is a four-seat electric grand tourer built on Jaguar's dedicated electric architecture, and it is the production version of the Type 00 concept shown in December 2024. The interior was revealed in August, both on Jaguar's site and in Jaguar's own media release, and it carries over the concept's most radical idea: a central spine running the full length of the cabin, creating what the company calls four individual spaces, with a ClearSight rear-view display set into the base of the windscreen. Jaguar's chief interior designer Thomas Holden called it an architectural statement, in contrast to the horizontal interior design norm.
The car has been seen in public repeatedly. A prototype ran demonstration laps at Monaco before the Formula E race in May, appeared at Monterey Car Week in August, and finished that tour at the Pebble Beach Concours on 16 August in a new wrap. Deliveries are expected in the first half of 2027, per Autocar India's timeline of the reveal's history, which also records how the debut slipped from 2025 to September 2026 and then to October. That timeline matters, because the reveal has already been delayed twice, and Jaguar has spent the better part of two years without a single new model to sell.
Expected: everything with a number attached
Now the part that deserves a health warning. Jaguar has published no official power, range, charging or pricing figures for the Type 01, and every specific number in circulation traces back to briefings or speculation rather than homologated data. The claims of a tri-motor setup producing more than 1,000bhp and a range well beyond 400 miles come from material around JLR's investor day in June, and carwow's most-anticipated list, which calls the Type 01 its most-anticipated car of 2026, repeats the three-motor and 1,000hp claims in exactly that pre-reveal register. Six-figure pricing is an inference from the brand's stated move upmarket, not a published list price.
Treat all of it as expectation. If Jaguar announces a range figure tomorrow, it will be the first one that exists. Anyone quoting you a Type 01 price tonight is guessing, and we will not repeat a figure as fact that the company has not said.
Five things to watch at the reveal
Whether the exterior survived production. The Type 00 concept divided opinion more sharply than any show car in recent memory, and the interior reveal suggests Jaguar kept its nerve indoors. The exterior is the harder test: concepts get softened for production, and how much of the concept's presence remains will shape every headline that follows.
Real range and charging figures. A luxury GT lives or dies on these numbers in a way city cars do not. If the circulated range claims land anywhere near reality, the Type 01 competes directly with the Porsche Taycan, the Audi e-tron GT and Ferrari's electric Luce. If they fall short, the pricing argument gets much harder.
UK pricing and order timing. Jaguar has confirmed the car but said nothing about what it costs or when the order book opens. A confident launch comes with a price and an open book; a nervous one comes with a promise of details later. The gap between those two outcomes tells you how the company itself feels about the product.
The interior in production trim. The August reveal showed show-car materials: travertine-inspired finishes, brass details, concealed compartments. Production cars get value-engineered, and the distance between the August photographs and the production cabin will be a fair measure of how much of the "Copy Nothing" philosophy made it through.
What JLR says about the wider plan. One car does not make a brand. JLR announced thousands of job cuts in September 2026, the pressure on the group is real, and our JLR restructure coverage set out the backdrop. Anything said in New York about what follows the Type 01, and how quickly, matters as much as the car itself.
Why tomorrow matters beyond Jaguar
The Type 01 is the most binary launch of the year. If it lands, Jaguar has a future as an electric luxury marque and the rebrand becomes the case study in how to start again. If it does not, Britain's most famous car name is left selling a single electric model into a market that moved on. Bentley, the other British luxury brand going electric, took the opposite path: keep the brand intact, reveal the Torcal, invest £350m in the Crewe line, as we covered in our piece on Bentley's first EV. Tomorrow the two strategies finally stand side by side on real metal, and one of them will look right.
The covers come off in New York tomorrow. We will have the detail, and the numbers that actually exist, the moment they do.
