Motorway Service Chargers: What Long-Distance EV Charging Actually Looks Like in 2026
From 12 charging bays to 48 at a single M5 services, motorway charging has changed fast. What the network offers now, and how to use it well.
The motorway service area has always had two jobs: fuel and a break. For electric cars the two have quietly merged, since the time your car spends charging is time you would often have spent buying a coffee anyway. But the experience of charging on the motorway network has changed so quickly that advice from even three years ago is out of date. The single faulty 50kW post that defined early EV motorway travel is being replaced by banks of chargers that look more like fuel forecourts. Here is where the network actually stands in the summer of 2026.
The headline change: scale
Start with the most striking example. Moto Exeter, at junction 30 of the M5, reopened in February 2026 as a GRIDSERVE Super Hub with 48 ultra-rapid charging bays, 44 for cars and four dedicated to electric lorries. It is now the largest ultra-rapid charging station in the country. For perspective, the same site had 12 ultra-rapid bays in 2022. Four years, a quadrupling in size, and chargers rated up to 400kW on ABB's latest hardware.
That site is the flagship rather than the norm, but the direction is clear. GRIDSERVE and Extra MSA are adding 96 high-power charging bays across seven motorway service areas by late 2026, with 400kW-capable chargers at Beaconsfield, Baldock, Cambridge, Cobham, Cullompton, Leeds Skelton Lake and Peterborough. The first of those opened at Beaconsfield in December 2025. In March 2026, GRIDSERVE and Roadchef opened a Super Hub at Folkestone M20 Services with 12 bays rated up to 360kW, positioned deliberately as a last charge before the Channel Tunnel and a first charge for arrivals from France.
The strategic context sits behind all of this. The government's stated vision was at least six high-powered chargepoints at every motorway service area in England, with around 6,000 high-powered chargepoints across motorways and major A-roads by 2035. Provision has grown quickly from a low base, and the flagship sites are now racing well ahead of that benchmark.
What it is like to actually use
The day-to-day experience has improved along two axes: speed and friction.
On speed, a 400kW-capable bay means a modern EV can add over 100 miles of range in less than 10 minutes. Real-world charging speeds depend on your car's acceptance rate, the battery's temperature and its state of charge, so most drivers will see less than the headline figure. But the practical effect is that a motorway stop is settling towards the length of a comfort break plus a coffee rather than a lunch.
On friction, contactless payment is now standard on the major networks, with a two-step plug-in-and-pay process, so the collection of apps and RFID cards that early adopters needed is becoming optional rather than essential. Reliability has improved too, and the larger operators now publish their figures. GRIDSERVE states that its network achieves 99% operational reliability across applicable chargepoints, measured against the UK Public Charge Point Regulations requirement.
Zapmap's annual survey, the most comprehensive read on driver sentiment, found satisfaction with public charging at 69 out of 100, up five points on the previous year, with 60% of drivers saying the network had improved over the past twelve months. One finding in that survey is directly relevant here: charging hubs have overtaken motorway service areas as the most popular place to charge, which says less about motorway charging declining and more about good charging spreading everywhere else. The honest caveats
Two things keep this from being a uniformly rosy picture. The first is price. Motorway rapid charging remains the most expensive electricity on the network, commonly 65-85p per kWh, against home charging at a fraction of that. The convenience is real, but so is the premium, and drivers who can shift charging to cheaper locations save meaningful money. The second is distribution. The flagship hubs cluster on the busiest corridors, and the network's weakest spots are still the less-trafficked services and some rural stretches. The government's own analysis acknowledges the gaps: an average of eight public rapid chargepoints per motorway service area, but with significant variation between locations, and the South East best served. Grid connection costs, not demand, are the usual bottleneck, which is why the Rapid Charging Fund exists to subsidise upgrades where the commercial case alone falls short.
How to charge well on a long journey
The habits that separate a good motorway charging experience from a stressful one are simple and mostly free. Charge to 80% and move on: charging speed falls sharply past that point, so the last 20% costs you disproportionate time. Plan one backup site: the major corridors usually have a second services within range, and a 30-second check before you travel removes most single-point-of-failure risk. Time your stops around peak periods if you can, since bank holiday queues are real at popular sites even with expanded capacity. And check live status in a mapping app rather than assuming, because even a 99%-reliable network has its off days, and knowing which bay is working before you park saves the shuffle.
The summary of where we are: motorway charging in 2026 is no longer the gamble it once was, at least on the main network. It is fast, it is mostly reliable, it is getting cheaper to operate as scale grows, and its remaining weak points, price and uneven coverage, are both visible in the data and both moving in the right direction. The services stop is doing what it always did, just with a plug instead of a pump.
