Small EVs and City Driving: Why the Maths Works Best in Town
Most UK car trips are under five miles, and small electric cars are now the cheapest new cars in Britain. Here is why city driving is where electric makes the most sense.
The electric car conversation tends to fixate on range, motorways and the price of public charging. Yet the ordinary British car journey looks nothing like that. It is a school run, a supermarket trip, a commute of a few miles through stop-start traffic. That is the driving most of us actually do, and it is exactly the driving that small electric cars are built for. The maths, the streets and even the charging habits line up in favour of going small and going electric if your life happens in town.
The trips we actually take
Start with the Department for Transport's own travel diary data. In England in 2024, 25% of all trips were under one mile, and 70% were under five miles. For trips over a mile, the car was the most frequent way of getting there. Zoom into car journeys specifically and the pattern holds: 59% of car trips themselves were under five miles, according to the same NTS analysis.
Compare that with what a modern small EV carries in its battery. The Dacia Spring, currently the cheapest new car in Britain, manages up to 140 miles from its 24.3kWh battery. Even on a pessimistic real-world discount, that is a fortnight of typical urban driving between charges. A Citroen e-C3 with around 200 miles of official range covers a month of average town use with room to spare. The range anxiety that dominates online debate assumes a motorway journey most people make a handful of times a year, not the two-mile hop that fills most of the diary.
Stop-start traffic is where EVs are strongest
A petrol engine is at its least efficient and most stressed crawling between traffic lights. An electric drivetrain does the opposite. Regenerative braking recovers energy every time you lift off approaching a junction, and the motor draws next to nothing while you sit stationary with the lights on. There is no clutch to ride, no gearbox to work, and no fuel being burned to keep the engine idling outside the school gates.
The efficiency numbers make the case plainly. Dacia quotes up to 5 miles per kWh for the Spring in favourable use, and small, light EVs routinely top the efficiency charts because they have less mass to shift around. Even at typical public charging prices, a car doing 4 to 5 miles per kWh costs a fraction of what a small petrol hatchback burns in fuel over the same urban miles. The price argument has quietly flipped
For years the honest objection to small EVs was price. A city car with a battery cost thousands more than its petrol equivalent, which looked absurd for a runabout. That objection has now collapsed at the bottom of the market. In June 2026 Dacia cut the Spring's starting price to £11,990, making it the cheapest new car on sale in the UK regardless of fuel type, undercutting the petrol Dacia Sandero by nearly £3,000. The Leapmotor T03 sits close behind at £12,995.
Step up a class and the value continues. The Renault 5 E-Tech, a proper supermini rather than a quadricycle-style runabout, starts at £22,995 and offers around 250 miles of range. It has become the UK's best-selling new electric car, topping the EV charts in July 2026 with 1,805 registrations. Charging in town: the habits match the car
Small EVs and city life also suit each other on charging. Zapmap's annual survey of nearly 4,000 EV drivers found that 49% use the public network less than once a month, and many of those charge publicly only at specific moments such as holidays. A small battery that fills overnight on a 7kW wallbox, or tops up during a supermarket shop, fits that rhythm comfortably. For drivers without off-street parking, on-street provision is growing fastest where small EVs are most useful. Zapmap's infrastructure data shows tens of thousands of on-street charging devices across the UK, with around 30% year-on-year growth in London and the regions alike. A car with a 24kWh battery is far less demanding on that network than a 100kWh electric SUV, both in the power it needs and how long it occupies a bay.
City charges still favour electric
One London change is worth flagging honestly. The Congestion Charge's Cleaner Vehicle Discount ended on 25 December 2025, so EVs now pay the £18 daily charge, reduced to £13.50 on Auto Pay. Free central-London access is no longer part of the sales pitch.
The wider picture has not changed, though. Electric cars remain fully exempt from the £12.50 ULEZ charge across all of Greater London, and from the clean air zone charges operating in Birmingham, Bristol and Sheffield. For a driver in outer London or any UK city with a CAZ, an older petrol or diesel car can cost £9 or more per day while a small EV pays nothing.
Who a small EV genuinely suits
Be realistic about the trade. A 140-mile city car is not the car for regular long motorway trips, and a single-car household doing weekly 200-mile journeys should look at the bigger-battery end of the market instead. Insurance for city cars can be higher than their purchase price suggests, and the cheapest EVs are sparse inside.
But for the two-car household, the urban commuter, or anyone whose driving matches the national travel diary, the small EV is now the rational choice rather than the idealistic one. It is cheaper to buy than its petrol equivalent at the bottom of the range, dramatically cheaper per mile in the stop-start driving that dominates UK travel, kinder on city air, and easier to park on the streets it is designed for. The national picture backs this up: battery electric cars took a 27.5% share of new registrations in July, with 156,571 cars registered overall in the market's best July since 2019. The small end of that market is where the value story is sharpest, and where the electric argument needs the fewest caveats.
