Why EVs Are Cheaper to Service: The Maintenance Maths Behind the Saving
An EV service costs about £103 against £151 for petrol, and the gap widens over five years. The reasons are mechanical, not promotional.
Of all the running-cost comparisons between electric and petrol cars, servicing is the one with the least ambiguity. Fuel costs depend on tariffs and pump prices, insurance on postcodes and claims history, depreciation on market mood. Servicing depends on what is physically under the bonnet, and an electric car simply has less of it. The data now backs this up from several independent directions, and the size of the saving is larger than most buyers expect.
What the numbers say
Start with the sharpest like-for-like figure available. BookMyGarage, whose comparison platform sees real bookings across UK garages, puts the average electric car service at £103, against £151 for petrol and £163 for diesel. That is roughly a third less per visit, on real transactions rather than list prices.
The longer view is more striking. The Car Expert, working with Clear Vehicle Data on manufacturer servicing schedules covering more than 600 new and near-new cars on sale in the UK, found that electric cars are around 29% cheaper to service over the first five years of ownership: £4,022 against £5,709 for petrol, diesel and hybrid equivalents. The gap holds across the ownership curve: 28% cheaper averaged over years one to three, and 31% cheaper over years three to five. That last figure matters for used buyers, since it means the saving survives well past the warranty period.
Like-for-like model comparisons tighten the argument further. In 56 direct comparisons where the same brand offers both petrol and electric versions of similar cars, the electric model was cheaper to service in 53 cases. A Vauxhall Corsa Electric is 31% cheaper to maintain than its petrol sibling over three years; a Kia Niro EV is 20% cheaper over the same period and 34% cheaper from years three to five.
Why the saving exists
The explanation is mechanical rather than promotional. A combustion drivetrain is a collection of parts engineered to survive controlled explosions: pistons, valves, a timing belt or chain, a clutch, fuel injectors, an exhaust system, an oil pump. Each of those is a wear item or a service item with a schedule attached. An electric drivetrain replaces nearly all of it with a motor, a reduction gearbox and power electronics. Industry estimates typically put an EV drivetrain at around 20 moving parts against roughly 2,000 in a combustion engine, which is a dramatic reduction in the number of things that can wear, leak or fail.
So the annual service shrinks. There is no engine oil or oil filter, no air or fuel filter, no spark plugs, no cambelt to replace at four-figure intervals, no clutch to wear out. What remains on the schedule is a shorter list: brake fluid checks, cabin pollen filter, coolant inspections for the battery thermal management system, tyre rotation, software updates and a battery health diagnostic. Less work, fewer parts, lower bill.
Brakes deserve their own mention. Regenerative braking uses the motor to slow the car and feed energy back to the battery, which means the friction brakes do a fraction of the work they do on a petrol car. The consequence is pad life measured in unusually large numbers: EV brake pads can last beyond 80,000 miles, where a petrol car might consume two or three sets over the same distance. The brake line on a long-term EV service history is often a pair of inspections and nothing else.
The honest caveats
None of this makes EVs maintenance-free, and three caveats keep the picture honest.
Tyres work harder on an electric car. Battery weight and instant torque both eat rubber, so tyre wear can run faster than on a comparable petrol car, and EV-specific tyres are not always cheap. The tyre line on the budget partially claws back the brake saving.
Garage coverage is uneven. BookMyGarage notes that only 16% of UK mechanics are qualified to carry out electric vehicle servicing, so depending on where you live your nearest EV-capable garage may not be your nearest garage. This is improving as technician training catches up with the fleet, and manufacturer networks are already fully equipped, but it is a real consideration in rural areas.
Outliers exist. The Car Expert's own data flags the Volkswagen ID.3 as currently more expensive to service than the equivalent Golf, a pricing decision rather than a technical necessity, and a reminder that manufacturer service pricing is a commercial choice. Checking the service plan cost of the specific model you are buying beats relying on any average.
One cost that sometimes gets folded into this debate, the eventual battery replacement, is better understood as a warranty and degradation question than a servicing one, and the evidence there is reassuring. As we covered in our battery health piece, the UK's largest battery study found an average state of health of 95.15% across 8,000 tested vehicles, with even eight- to 12-year-old packs holding a median 85%. The battery is not a service item.
Putting it in the running-cost picture
A £1,687 saving over five years is welcome on its own. Combined with the fuel-saving side of the ledger, it starts to look structural. Home charging on an overnight tariff costs a fraction of petrol per mile, and the tax treatment of the electric mile remains lighter, a gap we quantified in our fuel duty versus electric mile comparison. Servicing is the quiet third pillar of that case: smaller, less dramatic than fuel savings, but unusually consistent since it follows from the design of the machine rather than from prices that move around.
For used buyers the message is particularly relevant. The 31% saving in years three to five lands exactly when out-of-warranty petrol cars start accumulating the bigger bills: cambelts, clutches, exhaust sections, injectors. An electric car of the same age largely skips that phase of ownership, which is part of why the used EV market has been growing as it has, a trend we examined in our Q2 used EV market review.
The summary is straightforward. Electric cars are cheaper to service for the least glamorous reason imaginable: there is less to service. The saving shows up in booking data, in manufacturer schedules and in like-for-like model comparisons, and it grows rather than shrinks as the car ages. For anyone still budgeting for an EV as if it were a petrol car with a plug, the service line is one place where reality is pleasantly cheaper than the assumption.
